One of the joys of staying in La Orotava is that the best hikes in Teide National Park start 20-30 minutes away by car. These are the ones we most recommend to guests, from the easiest to the most demanding, with everything you need to know before setting off.
Roques de García (easy · 3.7 km · 1 h 30)
The most photographed trail in the park and the best one to start with. It's a loop with barely any elevation gain that circles the Roques de García —the Roque Cinchado and the walls of La Catedral— with views over the Llano de Ucanca. It starts next to the Parador. Suitable for families.
Pico Viejo (hard · high mountain · permit)
Mount Teide's sister volcano, for those after high-mountain terrain. You set off early and need to bring water, nuts and warm clothing: it's cold up there even when it's sunny down in the valley. To reach the summit of Mount Teide (3,718 m) you need a free permit for the final 200 metres, which is best requested weeks in advance.
Mirador del Volcán Chinyero (moderate · 6.9 km · 2 h 30)
A trail through Canary pines and fields of recent lava: Chinyero was Tenerife's last eruption, in 1909. It has partial shade and a spectacular volcanic landscape without the crowds of the central trails.
Pijaral Trail · Anaga (moderate · laurel forest)
A change of world: about 50 minutes away, the Anaga massif holds an ancient laurel forest, ferns and mist. The Pijaral trail is the most photogenic, and requires a free online permit with a limited quota. Biosphere Reserve.
Tips for planning your day
- Set off early: Mount Teide clouds over from midday onwards in summer.
- Dress in layers: 18-22 °C down below, 5-10 °C up in Las Cañadas.
- Online permits: the summit of Mount Teide and the Pijaral trail need a free permit; request it 1-2 weeks ahead.
- A car is essential: the buses do go up, but a car gives you the freedom to stop at the viewpoints.
When you come back from the trail, the estate's pool is waiting. If you tell us what level you're after, we'll point you to the right trail and the best time to set off from the house.
