Rural house in La Orotava · Tenerife

Rural house in La Orotava, at the foot of Mount Teide.

La Orotava is one of the most beautiful valleys on Tenerife: a heritage old town, manor houses with carved tea-wood balconies, banana plantations dropping towards the sea, and Mount Teide always in view. Hacienda Verde is a 17,000 m² country estate in the heart of the valley, with three independent holiday cottages inside an ethnographic park. Here's what surrounds you — and why you should stay here.

The Orotava Valley

La Orotava's old town is a listed Historic-Artistic Site: steep cobbled streets, 17th- and 18th-century manor houses with carved tea-wood balconies, the Church of La Concepción and the famous Casa de los Balcones. Each June the Corpus Christi carpets of flowers and coloured sand cover the streets of the town.

From the estate, the old town is a 5–15 minute drive away — an unhurried morning or evening stroll, with lookout points opening onto the valley and Mount Teide.

Mount Teide and Las Cañadas, a stone's throw away

Teide National Park begins a 20–30 minute drive up from the valley. Roques de García (3.7 km, easy) is the most photographed trail; Pico Viejo and the summit of Teide are for those after high-mountain hiking (permit required). The volcanic landscape of Las Cañadas is like nowhere else.

Further northeast, the Anaga massif — ancient laurel forest and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — is about 50 minutes away. Three different worlds within half an hour's drive.

Eating and drinking in the north

Northern Tenerife is wine country: the malvasías and reds from these slopes have centuries of history, and the estate keeps its own traditional wine press, a century old. The guachinches — seasonal home-cooking eateries — serve unpretentious Canarian food and house wine.

In La Orotava and nearby Puerto de la Cruz you'll find everything from guachinches to white-tablecloth restaurants: papas with mojo, slow-cooked pork, island cheeses, gofio and fresh fish from the port.

The houses

Where to stay: inside the park, not next to it

What sets Hacienda Verde apart is that you don't visit the countryside — you sleep in it. Three independent rural houses — La Era, El Castaño and Casa Azul — spread across 17,000 m² of gardens replanted over 30 years with native Canary Island flora. Each has its own character, kitchen and entrance; all share the pool, with Mount Teide right in front.
