The carved wooden trough

A trough carved from a single hollowed-out log, resting against the stone wall with a couple of clay jars beside it.

Carved wooden trough, hollowed from a single log, resting against a stone wall beside clay water jars

One of the humblest features on the estate, and one of the loveliest to look at.

The story

The carved wooden trough was made by hollowing out a whole log with an adze, with no joints or planks. It served as a feeding and watering trough for the animals, pigs and goats, and, when needed, for kneading or for the tasks of the pig slaughter.

Each one was different, shaped by the tree it came from. This one rests against the wall, like a tool left where it has always been.

Did you know

Being carved from a single piece, a carved wooden trough could last generations: it had no joints to open and no planks to come loose.
